Fossil Constraints on the Timescale of Parasitic Helminth Evolution

چکیده

The fossil record of parasitic helminths is often stated to be severely limited. Many studies have therefore used host constraints constrain molecular divergence time estimates helminths. Here we review direct evidence for several these lineages belong various phyla (Acanthocephala, Annelida, Arthropoda, Nematoda, Nematomorpha, Platyhelminthes). Our compilation shows that the soft-bodied patchy, but more diverse than commonly assumed. provides ectoparasitic (e.g., worm-like pentastomid arthropods) been around since early Paleozoic, while endoparasitic (cestodes, nematodes) arose at least during, or possibly even before late Paleozoic. Nematode parasitizing terrestrial plant and animal hosts in existence Devonian Triassic, respectively. All major Platyhelminthes, Nematomorpha) had evolved Mesozoic. Interestingly, although parasitism considered derived within Metazoa, oldest Nematoda Platyhelminthes includes body fossils representatives. Furthermore, falls times based on co-evolution suggesting themselves might just as good complementary (and less circular justification) calibration associations. Data also provide obvious switches extinctions, which cautions against models pure co-divergence where use calibrations may considered.

Malnutrition and parasitic helminth infections.

The Global Burden of Disease caused by the 3 major intestinal nematodes is an estimated 22.1 million disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) lost for hookworm, 10.5 million for Ascaris lumbricoides, 6.4 million for Trichuris trichiura, and 39.0 million for the three infections combined (as compared with malaria at 35.7 million) (World Bank, 1993; Chan et al. 1994); these figures illustrate why s...

Two-timescale evolution on a singular landscape

Under the effect of strong genetic drift, it is highly probable to observe gene fixation or gene loss in a population, shown by infinite peaks on a coherently constructed potential energy landscape. It is then important to ask what such singular peaks imply, with or without the effects of other biological factors. We studied the stochastic escape time from the infinite potential peaks in the Wr...
